‘Paper Weaving’ is a two-piece Diptych completed in April, 2025, measuring 4.5”x6”, framed and matted on 8.25” x 1’.
This diptych features early works by pin-up illustrator Peter Driben, recontextualized through cutting and compositional contrast. In Piece 1 (left), I incorporate an early work by Alphonse Mucha—a longtime favorite of mine—while Piece 2 (right) juxtaposes a photograph of a brothel/nightclub originally published in National Geographic. By sourcing from my personal archive, I continue my exploration of hyper-femininity—an aesthetic often celebrated and, at times, villainized in Driben’s illustrations. These two collages work in dialogue, emphasizing opposing representations while highlighting the tension between idealization and objectification in visual culture.
